Absolutely one of my favorite songs of yours , I have a granddaughter ( actually 2) and we’ve been to the beach and whenever we make a sand castle I sing mavis to her ! Also I’ve meet you in beacon twice over the years and it’s such a treat as a fan thank you for your music
One of favorites, always brings a tear to my eyes. It connects to me as both a parent and a grandparent, watching my daughters and my granddaughter grow and make their way out into this world.
This song, to me is a cornerstone. I've heard it hundreds of times and every single time, I see it. The family, the beach, the orange bird, the little girl...and every single time I feel envy for the perfection you achieved...and I perceive now the price you may have paid for that perfection on different levels through all the days, tours and performances. I hope endless gratitude helps to pay off some of these costs. Thank you for this one, Maestro. Just think of how many others came after and how many more are near by.
This is a great song and one of my favorite Shindell. Great performance requirement (just amazing earlier live performance on guitar and vocals). Many thanks for the new performance and releasing the session recording (loved it!). I've navigated through different performances of the song on youtube and have favorites. There is one electric guitar version from "interview and live impression - live at DBR 2019" where the video only shows couple seconds of a performance of There Goes Mavis, always wanted to hear it in full.
The last Sunday in August, here in Portland Oregon, with my sister. I am taking over her device to share this comment, (she approves) Thank you for taking us back to the beach to see Mavis once again, to see the horizon, to realize that "all is mere breath." We too are fighting this battle as well, battling with ourselves and with the desire to get it right just this once! Te lo agradecemos mucho. Lynne and April
Seeing the Tibetan bowl, I wonder, have you (do you) purposefully tune to 432Hz and that's why you're just shy of 440Hz? The sound healer is curious; the composer in me is experimental.
There's a lot going on with that bowl. The harmonic series is all over the place: 49Hz, 99, 492, 686, 1369. The guitar... I just forgot to check the tuning before that take!
I've never heard this before, and I was following along the lyrics as I watched the video. I don't know how, but someone I teared up in the final verse. There's something magical here.
I've just gone and ordered a copy of Vuelta. How stupid of me not to have had it already.
Hi, Richard. I saw you play Mavis last night at the Kitchen Garden Café in Birmingham — I was the one who requested it at half time. Just the most beautiful rendition. Thank you so much.
Geez Richard---how much we have missed you!!! The guitar work on this vid is absolutely sensational----you are truly one of a kind and we can't wait to see you again!
You are a songwriter with a poetic sensibility. That's what poets do, or one of the things poets do: they hold in their minds two events happening simultaneously (building a sandcastle, freeing the bird), describe them, and make us see how they illuminate each other, one about freedom and escape, the other about the inexorableness of the waves that can't be escaped, of building walls and of opening doors. It's a quality of paying attention and a desire not to forget or overlook how marvelous the world is, how seemingly small things can touch the heart and make music together. It's a gift to have that sensibility, and a gift to share it with listeners and readers. Thank you.
Solidarity from the UK, except I am trying to ignore the beautiful day and concentrate on planning lessons for when this summer flies away. Glad to hear I'm not the only one feeling caged (but I'm not sure why that should make me feel better??). Love that 'things which need to be included' includes your singing bowl, but especially the idea of 'merest breath' instead of vanity.
Man, this is so great ... and I love the description of all the variables of vanity. Lovely song, beautifully performed, and laid out here with such generosity.
Wonderful to hear those versions a d follow the words. The song is special to us. Heading to Newcomb Hollow in September. We always think of Mavis when we are in beautiful Wellfleet.
There Goes Mavis always makes me cry. Beautiful song. Thank you.

LOVE. So wonderful. I was just at Newcomb Hollow Beach the other night, humming this to myself. 🙏🏻
I was there recently. Sorry our paths didn't cross.
Next time—would like that.
It’s those birds of Argentina and Uruguay. They’ll do you in every time.
Undulated tinamous, pearly-vented tody-tyrants, green-chinned euphonias... It can be very difficult. But I'm not the least bittern.
McCabes misses you.
And I miss McCabes.
Only one way to cure the longing…..

Thanks Mike. I'm glad the song resonated with you.

Thank you John.
So beautifully expressed, John — yes.
